Things to Ponder Before Branding Your Business

Being in the Graphic Design field for over eight years has given me an opportunity to work with many branding projects. I have found that there are two kinds of clients – the ones who know what they want and those who have no clue. Often times it is the latter category of clients that end up being difficult to handle. This is a woe many designers and branding experts face. This struggle has given birth to a lot of funny memes shared in the graphic design and branding community.

But let us now think about it from the perspective of a startup that is ready to embark on the journey to start a business and is in need to get their Branding done. Now, It is usually a lifelong dream that is being given breath to at this stage, and I think it is very important to start with understanding what you want your Brand to be. More often than not if you are clear about what you want and want to show, your Branding Partner will be bang on when they deliver you the designs and strategy.

P.S. – If you do use a branding company or graphic designer for your branding endeavors you do not really need to go into too much details but at least get the outline and intention out there so that your designer understands your business at a personal level.

What Is Your Story

Businesses start with a dream an idea and vision. Its probably a life long dream that is being built brick by brick and step by step. And this journey is what gives your business a story.

Put yourself in the shoe of a kid starting to draw on a blank canvas. And just fill it with stories that brought you to where you are without worrying about sounding stupid. You can edit it later. Just get that pen moving and write about your story.

The Why and the Purpose

Money is a big motivation to start a business but at the core every business has a greater purpose.

Your purpose guides your action and motivates your employees so be intentional while writing this part down.

What is it that drives you to take the next step?

What make you think it is all worth the effort and the struggle?

What are you giving back to the world?

And chances are you already have a pretty good idea what the purpose of your business is, after all you put everything into it for a reason.

What is your Brand Personality

Now think about the visual part. How do you want your brand to look?

Here the best practice would be to understand what your target audience would like to see and what you want to stand out as. If you choose to rely on a branding partner you can expect them to come up with color pallets and mood boards that would resonate with your target audience. It wont matter if you like black if your target audience loves pink.

Not saying that you should not consider your preferences, instead blend your likes with that of your Audience. And since you are dedicating your life to this business you probably are passionate about the likes and dislikes of your audience already. You also must be having a clear idea of what they want.

Sit with a moodboarding tool – Canva is a great platform that allows you to make designs for free you can use it to make free moodbords too.

What Makes You Unique?

Every product or service out there needs something to stand out, something unique to offer, that sets them apart from the crowd. That’s called your Unique Value Proposition (UVP). It’s basically a short and sweet sentence that tells people what’s so unique about your thing and why it’s the best.

Your UVP is the core of your brand messaging – what makes you stand out in a crowd. Plus, if you’re putting together a business plan, nailing your UVP is a must. Investors and lenders will be all over it, making sure your business has what it takes to succeed.
